Daisy Coffey is an artist working to combine and experiment with a variety of mediums and processes, primarily ceramics, metal, and fiber. She received a BFA in Arts Education with a concentration in ceramics and metal from Appalachian State University. Inspiration for her practice revolves around her reverence for protecting childhood and women's resilience in our society. She aims to create beautiful, functional objects while putting quality craftsmanship at the forefront of her practice. She has experience teaching art to all ages in k-12 and college level classrooms. Coffey has exhibited her work locally at the Nth Degree Gallery and at Baltimore Clayworks in Maryland. She has also been an instructional assistant for Andrea Keys Connell. Currently she is working out of her home studio in Boone NC, and working for a local potter.
As a creator, I have been focused on the importance of nurturing and protecting childhood, the immense power that women’s bodies hold, and the interconnectedness between Mother Nature and humanity. I am inspired by childhood wonder, rounded playful shapes, the female figure, and the organic patterns and structures found in nature.
I feel most at peace when I am able to fully immerse myself in the process of making. I enjoy the challenge of pushing the limits of the material I am working with and combining materials to create unique, functional, and sculptural objects. Hand building with clay is my preferred way of making, but I also enjoy working with metal and other mixed media such as paper, fibers, epoxy, and plastics. The craftsmanship of my work is important to me, and my creative process is usually tedious which I find a strange fulfillment and satisfaction in.
My experience working with children and their wonderful ways of making also greatly influence my creative projects. I hope to inspire viewers to think deeply about the societal constructs that prevent us from freely learning, being, thinking, creating, and expressing ourselves in an all-inclusive, kind world.
I hold so much gratitude for the circumstances I was born into, my education, and the privilege I have to dedicate this time and energy into creating art. I hope that my creations invoke joy and curiosity for those who see them.
